Water Infrastructures

Our areas of expertise:

Our experience in Water Infrastructures is important and in different geographies.

Water systems are a special kind of infrastructures because they perform three roles: they provide water services, they decontaminate water while also reducing risks to other services from natural hazards such as floods and droughts. Inicia2 has participated in important water infrastructures, providing financial know-how.

  • Tenes Lilmyah SPA is a desalination plant in Tenes, Algeria under a 25-year concession with an installed capacity of 200.000 m3/day. The plant features a system to generate electricity sustainably by taking advantage of the brine surplus in the reverse osmosis process, which allows the reduction of energy consumption of the facility. Another environmental innovation is the CO2 production equipment from natural gas for the water remineralization, before entering the water grid. This improvement makes the water less corrosive after the reverse osmosis process. The main shareholder was in financial trouble, and a group of debtors commissioned Inicia2 to inspect the asset, analyse the financial value and detect potential buyers.
  • Befesa Desalination Developments Ghana Ltd is a desalination plant in Ghana with a capacity of 60,000 m3/day of seawater, providing fresh water to more than 300,000 people in various municipalities of the Greater Accra administrative region. The project was awarded under the design, build, operate and maintain during 25 years. Ghana Water Limited Company, a state-owned company, buys the potable water. The main shareholder was in financial trouble, and a group of debtor commissioned Inicia2 to inspect the asset, analyse the financial value and detect potential buyers. In the meantime, the off-taker stopped paying for the freshwater provided and Befesa Desalination Developments Ghana filed for insolvency proceedings.
  • Zapotillo is a 134Km aqueduct concession in Mexico consisting in building, maintaining to provide with potable water from the El Zapotillo dam to the municipalities of Los Altos de Jalisco. The project, awarded to Abengoa, first had design flaws that delayed the start of the construction and then Abengoa started with financial problems which conducted to further delays. Zapotillo was in the viability plan of Abengoa and proceeds from the disposal were meant to pay the “New Money”. Inicia2 was hired to evaluate this project and analyse if there was any value or there were liabilities.
  • San Antonio Water System. It is a 225 km aqueduct pumping fresh water from new wells and aquifers in Simsboro and Carrizo to San Antonio (Texas). The consortium Vista Alegre was awarded the design, construction and maintenance (for 30 years). One of the members of the consortium pledged this project to achieve further financing for other purposes. One bank financing the project engaged Inicia2 to provide with an opinion on this project and what were the penalties for this consortium and in particular of the defaulted party could be spelt.
